Uber Pays Staff Engineers Up to $259K: Fresh Salary Data Shows What Tech Workers Really Make in 2025

Uber's push to become a "super app" comes with big paychecks for tech workers, with staff engineers earning up to $259,000 in base salary alone.

The ride-hailing giant filed to hire nearly 500 workers through visa programs this year. That's up from 350 last year, showing the company wants more tech talent. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said,

"We're slowly moving towards a super app of sorts," as the company looks beyond just rides and food delivery.

New salary data from government filings show exactly what Uber pays its corporate tech workers. The numbers come from visa applications that companies must file with the US Department of Labor.

But these are just base salaries.

Most tech workers also get stock options and bonuses on top of their regular pay. So the real money could be much higher.

Software developers can earn base salaries as high as $266,400, based on federal data. This makes them some of the highest-paid workers at the company. Staff Software Engineers earn between $225,200 and $258,800, while Senior Engineering Managers can make up to $287,000.

Data scientists also do well at Uber. Senior Data Scientists earn between $150,400 and $164,300, while Staff Scientists can make up to $250,000. Regular Data Scientists start around $125,950 and can earn up to $175,019.

The highest-paid roles are in management and leadership.

Computer and Information Systems Managers can make up to $360,000, the same as Senior Directors of Engineering. These are the people who run big teams and make major tech decisions. Product Managers, who decide what features to build, earn between $158,700 and $197,000. IT Project Managers can make up to $215,900 for keeping tech projects on track.

Here's what's interesting about these numbers. Uber is paying competitive salaries even as many tech companies have slowed down hiring. The company had close to 800 open jobs in early August, with most openings in engineering, operations, and sales.

This tells us Uber is serious about its "super app" plans.

The company wants to do more than just rides and food delivery. It's working on self-driving cars and looking at ways to offer customers more services in one app. Think of it like WeChat in China, where you can do everything from messaging to paying bills.

But there are some things to watch out for. These salary numbers don't tell the whole story. They're just base pay, not total compensation. Many tech workers get most of their wealth from stock options, especially at successful companies like Uber.

Also, these are jobs for visa workers, not necessarily what Uber pays all employees. Companies sometimes offer different packages to different workers based on their skills and how badly they need them.

The job market for tech workers has gotten tougher lately. Many companies have done layoffs, and there's more competition for the best jobs. But Uber seems to be going the other way, hiring more people and paying well for top talent.

What happens next will depend on whether Uber can actually become that "super app" it wants to be. The company needs these tech workers to build new features and services that keep users coming back.

If Uber succeeds, these high salaries could pay off with a more valuable company and better stock prices. If not, the company might have to rethink its spending on talent.

"Uber is betting big on tech talent with salaries up to $360,000, showing the company is serious about becoming more than just a ride-hailing service."
